Leonard Pickard: The Night the Flask Broke

2 a.m. A ladder. Ten million hits dissolved in solvent. One slip - and, by his own telling, the largest accidental LSD exposure ever described by a living chemist.

Here is the story that keeps getting retold - most recently in a viral post that compressed it into a few hard lines: ten million hits of LSD, absorbed through the skin, one night in a New Mexico lab. Not a party. Not a carefully measured research protocol. A slip on a ladder at two in the morning.

The man telling it is William Leonard Pickard - Harvard-linked drug-policy researcher on one side of his life, the chemist later convicted in the largest U.S. LSD manufacturing case on the other. He has told versions of this accident in interviews and in his hybrid memoir-novel The Rose of Paracelsus. What follows is that incident, step by step - what he says actually happened that night.[1][2]

What happened

It is late. In the version that circulates most widely, the year is 1998, the place a remote lab in Santa Fe / New Mexico - the same stretch of years when federal accounts place a high-output LSD laboratory in the Santa Fe area (roughly 1997-1999).

Pickard is on a ladder, working alone at about 2 a.m., decanting a flask that holds, he says, on the order of ten million standard doses of LSD dissolved in solvent. He slips. The flask goes. He is drenched - head to toe - in the mixture.

Ordinary crystalline LSD on dry skin is already a nightmare scenario for chemists. This was worse. The carrier, he has said repeatedly, was methylene chloride (dichloromethane) - an organic solvent that moves through skin almost instantly, taking whatever is dissolved in it along for the ride.

In his own words, as reported from a 2022 interview: methylene chloride "goes through skin rather instantly, carrying with it whatever's dissolved, in this case 10 million doses of LSD drenching from head to foot."[1]

That is the accident. Not a rumor that he "took a lot of acid once." A broken flask, a body soaked in solvent-borne LSD, and a dose number that - if taken at face value - sits so far beyond clinical or street scales that ordinary language fails.

What he did next

The immediate response, in every version of the tale, is panic physics: strip, wash, try to stop the absorption that has already begun. Viral retellings put him naked under an emergency shower, blasting himself with water. In his longer interview account he describes an instant high, a panicked shower, and a lot of praying.

Then he leaves the lab and goes outside into the desert night.

Retellings say he collapsed in a field. Pickard's own description is quieter and stranger: he sits under a clear New Mexico sky - full moon, cacti on rolling hills, night birds, soft wind - and watches the world rearrange itself.

What he says he experienced

This is the part the internet loves, and the part only he can report.

He has described cosmic choirs of angels, every imaginable psychic transformation, versions of the self dissolving, votive fire, time and identity coming apart into pure light. Through the peak - in the compressed viral phrasing - one message holds: all would be okay.

In the fuller interview, the same night becomes almost pastoral before it becomes mystical. The ground looks like jewels. The air smells like "the perfume of goddesses and lovers." He feels tremendous bliss and comfort - "like everything was right, very all right, and would always be. And the universe was very kind and gentle. It was nothing to be afraid of." That, he says, went on through the night.[1]

Morning brings the twist that makes the story more than a dose brag. He says he realized that, in a sense, nothing had happened - that the ultimate experience was simply the natural mind, that the millions of doses had "no effect whatsoever" on the grace already there, and that the lesson was not the gift of a drug but of who we already are. Then, in a detail both versions share: he felt refreshed, cleaned up, and went back to work.

Viral posts land that last beat as a punchline. Pickard lands it as a teaching. Either way, the plot is the same: largest accident, night in the desert, sunrise, back to the lab.

How big is "ten million hits," really?

A typical modern street dose of LSD is often put around 50-100 micrograms (sometimes higher in older counterculture lore). One milligram is already many strong hits. Ten million hits, at a round 100 micrograms each, is roughly one kilogram of pure LSD - the same order of magnitude federal accounts used when they claimed the Santa Fe-era lab could produce about a kilo every five weeks.

So the number is not random internet inflation. It matches the scale Pickard and prosecutors both used when talking about industrial underground batches. Whether every microgram of a shattered flask actually entered his bloodstream is a different question - solvent on skin, shower timing, how much ran off onto floor and clothes. Nobody weighed his blood that night. What we have is the chemist's claim: the flask held that much, the solvent carried it, he was soaked in it.

Clinics do not run this experiment. There is no parallel protocol for "fall into a liter-scale solution of lysergamide in methylene chloride." The story sits in the same rare category as other clandestine mega-exposures: unmeasured, unrepeatable, and known mainly because the person who lived through it later talked.

  • Exact milligrams absorbed versus milligrams that hit the floor.
  • How much of the angelic and "all would be okay" imagery is literal memory, literary reconstruction, or both.

Nobody weighed his blood that night. What we have is the chemist's claim: the flask held that much, the solvent carried it, he was soaked in it. This is Pickard's account of the most extreme night of his chemistry life, now circulating as one of the internet's favorite acid legends.

Why the story hits so hard

Because it is specific. Not "he took a lot of acid." Ladder. Two a.m. Flask. Methylene chloride. Ten million hits. Shower. Field. Sunrise. Back to work.

It also flips the usual morality play. The danger is not a raver with a tab. The danger is industrial potency plus gravity - a professional hazard so absurd it becomes myth the moment it is spoken. Whether you read the ending as miracle, tolerance, literary flourish, or pure luck, the middle of the story is pure physics: a solvent that does not care about your plans, and a molecule measured in micrograms.
